Uncharted Rhythm

Honest reflections on unexpected exits, planned retirements, and finding your new rhythm.

Jumping off a dock — metaphor for starting a blog and taking the leap.

Into the Deep

Before I share the heavier stories that shaped this blog, I want to begin with something simple — a moment from childhood that has stayed with me for decades. It’s a story about enthusiasm, risk, and leaping before you fully understand the water beneath you. In many ways, it mirrors how I’m approaching this new adventure in blogging. So, before we wade into the deeper reflections, let’s start with the first time I ever jumped into the deep end.

To begin, let me take you back to a perfect, warm, cloudless Pacific Northwest summer day. I was around five years old, full of unrestrained energy and excitement. At a family picnic, I couldn’t wait to get into the water. The moment our spot on the beach was set up, I sprinted ahead of my parents, ran to the end of the dock, and jumped right in.

There was just one problem:

I didn’t know how to swim!

As I sank toward the bottom of the lake, a quick‑thinking bystander reached in and pulled me out. My parents were furious at my impulsiveness, yet deeply grateful to the man who saved me from drowning.

That moment happened a long time ago, but I feel a similar sense of enthusiasm today as I jump into the deep end once again. Only this time, the deep end is blogging. While I know it won’t drown me, there are plenty of new “strokes” I need to learn to keep this site afloat. Where this journey will take me, I truly don’t know. But just like that little boy all those years ago, I’m excited to get started.

In the weeks ahead, I’ll be sharing the stories and transitions that shaped my career — the unexpected turns, the hard-earned lessons, and the moments that taught me how to swim in deeper waters.

I hope you’ll consider throwing me an occasional lifeline — a word of encouragement, a shared story, or your own reflections on career and life transitions. We can explore these waters together.

UR Insight

These are a collection of short, grounding reminders for moments of transition. UR stands for Uncharted Rhythm — but it also stands for “You Are”. Each insight mirrors the theme of a post and will be followed by a UR Reflection Question at the end of every post for community engagement or personal reflection. Here is the first one.

You are allowed to begin before you feel fully prepared — courage often arrives in motion, not before the leap.

UR Reflection Question

When have you jumped into something before you felt fully ready — and what did it teach you?
