What This Blog Is About

Every sunrise marks a new beginning — a reminder that each day brings choices we make and changes we never asked for. How we meet both shapes the rhythm of our lives and the transitions that define us.

Life rarely moves in straight lines. Over nearly 50 years of full‑time work — from blue‑collar and journeyman roles to private‑sector management and almost three decades in local government leadership — I’ve lived through reinvention, rupture, rebuilding, and renewal. Some transitions were chosen. Others were forced. All of them taught me something about identity, resilience, and the emotional terrain of change.

This blog explores those themes through honest, reflective writing. You’ll find:

  • stories from my own transitions
  • insights drawn from lived experience
  • grounding reflections for moments of uncertainty
  • encouragement for anyone navigating a new chapter

My goal is simple: to help you feel less alone in whatever transition you’re facing.

Understanding the Categories

My homepage has five main categories. Here’s what each one means and how you can use them.

Unplanned Job Loss — Stories and reflections from the most difficult professional transition of my life — being asked to step down after years of leadership. These posts explore identity, resilience, grief, and rebuilding.

Planned Retirement — Writing about the transition I chose — and how it still echoes with familiar emotions. These posts explore purpose, time, reinvention, and the unexpected challenges of stepping away from full‑time work.

Beyond the Desk — Life doesn’t fit neatly into categories. This section holds everything that lives outside work and retirement — travel, family, personal moments, and the everyday rhythms that shape a full life.

UR Insights — These are short, reflective aphorisms — each beginning with “You Are” — designed to offer a moment of clarity or grounding. UR Insights are meant to be quick touchpoints you can return to anytime, especially during moments of transition or uncertainty. Many posts end with a UR Insight to help you reconnect with your own resilience.

About Me — A deeper look at my story, my career arc, and why I started this blog. If you want to understand the person behind the writing, this is the place to start.

What You Can Expect Going Forward

I write with honesty, curiosity, and a willingness to explore the uncomfortable parts of transition. You can expect:

  • reflective essays
  • personal stories
  • identity‑focused insights
  • UR aphorisms
  • grounded encouragement
  • thoughtful exploration of change

I’m not here to prescribe solutions but will offer insights and tips that I hope you will find useful. I’m here to share what I’ve learned — and what I’m still learning — as I navigate my own uncharted rhythm.

A Personal Invitation

If something you read sparks a thought, a memory, or a question, I hope you’ll share it. Leave a comment, send a message, or simply sit with the reflection. This blog is a conversation — not a monologue — and your voice matters here.

Wherever you are in your journey, I’m glad you’re here. Let’s find our rhythm again, together.
